"Of a morning" is regional. An old southern gal we knew used that expression. My fave English teacher commented that she had no idea why she said "rench" for rinse. She must have grown up in an area where grandma washed clothes at an old wash tub; after the washing, she "renched" them. I read that somewhere not so long ago.

Attempts at Elegant English:
"Between you and I...." This expression has been used for so long by so many distinguished writers that it has become commonplace; however, it is not standard English.
"Margaret gave the presentation to John and I." Wrong! Though the above ["Between..."] has become acceptable, this attempt at elegant English doesn't fly. "me" in place of the incorrect "I".

Is it OK to say NO? I find it the supreme indulgence to say, "No, I can't do it!", and not feel the least need to explain. Feelings of guilt are gradually melting away.

Thanx for the query (the term we used in proofreading at The House of God, when requesting authoritative information).
The verb EFFECT means to bring about or to accomplish: "It is your duty as our representative to EFFECT our will."
"I love the way accents AFFECT the way".... meaning, "I love the way accents INFLUENCE the way...."
Your interest in correct speech will have a good effect on your listeners; it will effect change for the better and affect how we view one another.

When a word or phrase is being used with a special or ironical meaning, it is set off with quotation marks OR the words SO-CALLED. To refer to a disreputable woman as a SO-CALLED "lady" is incorrect [grammatically speaking]. Lose the SO-CALLED or lose the quotation marks. One or the other.
